Prescribing Services

Find details about the minor illnesses for which our pharmacists can assess and prescribe.

Pharmacists can prescribe for more than you think

If you need a prescription renewal, treatment for a common condition, vaccines for travel health, or even support to stop smoking, a pharmacist is able to help

Our pharmacists can assess and prescribe for:

Urinary Tract Infection (uncomplicated UTI)

Prescription renewals:  All provinces

No refills? No problem. Our pharmacists can renew many types of prescriptions, and even adapt existing prescriptions to better meet your health care needs (where provincial scope allows).

Cold sores

Common conditions (minor illness): All provinces

Think you need a prescription? Pharmacists can assess and prescribe medication for many common conditions, where appropriate. Professional fees may apply for select services. Not sure if we can help? Ask a member of our pharmacy team.
*In AB the pharmacist must have Additional Prescribing Authority.

Nasal allergies (Allergic Rhinitis)

Smoking cessation:  All provinces

Want to stop smoking? Speak to a pharmacist about quitting. Whether it's your first time or a follow-up, all consultations are welcome. A pharmacist will provide counselling, create a quit plan, recommend nicotine replacement therapy with over-the-counter products or may prescribe medications. They will provide you with resources, help you to set goals and schedule follow up visits to assess your plan.

Skin infection

Hormonal contraception: BC, AB*, SK, NB, NS, NL, PE

Looking for birth control? Our pharmacists will assess to determine if hormonal contraception (birth control) is appropriate for you. If so, the pharmacist will prescribe a new hormonal contraception medication or continue your current medication.
*In AB the pharmacist must have Additional Prescribing Authority.

skin rash

Lyme disease prevention: AB, ON, NB, NS, NL, PE

If you have been bitten by a tick, the pharmacist can assess the need for treatment to help prevent Lyme disease. This includes assessing whether the bite was from a blacklegged tick, if the tick was removed in the previous 72 hours, attached for at least 36 hours, and there are symptoms of Lyme disease, such as a rash at the bite site.
Please note the assessment does not include tick removal. Remove the tick and if possible, bring it with you in sealed clear plastic bag.

Hives, bug bites or stings (Urticaria)

Immunizations: AB, SK, NB, NS, NL, PE

Stay up to date on your vaccines. Prior to giving you any injection or vaccine, the pharmacist will conduct an assessment to ensure it is appropriate for you. Some vaccines or injections may require a prescription, and, in many cases, pharmacists can write the prescription for you. Vaccines do not provide 100% protection.

Therapeutic substitutions: BC, AB, NB, NS, NL, PE

Pharmacist may substitute the drug prescribed with a different drug that is expected to have a similar therapeutic effect.

Menstrual Cramps

Travel health: AB, SK, NB, NS, PE
